The CD
Ragin’, Full-On was released by the alternative rock band fIREHOSE, not the hard rock band FireHouse. It was the debut album from the group formed by ex-Minutemen members Mike Watt and George Hurley, along with new guitarist and vocalist Ed Crawford.
Overview
Release year: 1986.
Label: SST Records.
Significance: The album is dedicated to D. Boon, the late guitarist for Minutemen, who died in a car accident in 1985. Watt and Hurley formed fIREHOSE soon after this tragedy.
Musical style: Ragin’, Full-On merges elements of post-punk, funk, and jazz, creating a distinct alternative rock sound. Critic Greg Prato noted that while fIREHOSE would perfect their sound on later releases, their debut was a “worthwhile, interesting” effort.

Sound and reception
The CD demonstrated FIREHOSE’s unique blend of styles and served as a strong foundation for their career:
Mike Watt’s bass: Often noted for his incredible performance, Watt delivers a bass-heavy, jazz-influenced foundation to the songs.
Crawford’s contribution: New vocalist/guitarist Ed Crawford’s contribution was a departure from Minutemen’s sound. His “more restrained” voice and guitar work allowed the band to establish a new identity.
Critical reception: While considered a strong debut, some critics felt the sound was less unpredictable and more focused than Minutemen, but the band proved their own musical merit. The track “Chemical Wire” was a particular highlight.
Legacy
Ragin’, Full-On set the stage for fIREHOSE’s respected career in the American alternative underground. It was an initial step in establishing a new musical path for the surviving Minutemen members while still honoring their history.
