X-Men Vol. 2 (Marvel Comics, 1991–2001)
Launched in 1991 by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee, this landmark series began with X-Men #1 — one of the best-selling comic books of all time. It marked a fresh start for Marvel’s mutant heroes, introducing new costumes, a modernized tone, and splitting the team into two units: the Blue and Gold squads. Cyclops led the Blue Team (including Wolverine, Rogue, Gambit, Beast, and Psylocke), while Storm commanded the Gold Team.
The early issues focused on Magneto’s return and the X-Men’s uneasy alliance with him after the events of the Mutant Wars. Jim Lee’s dynamic art style defined the visual identity of the 1990s X-Men, setting a new standard for superhero comics.
After Claremont’s departure following issue #3, the series continued under writers like Fabian Nicieza, Scott Lobdell, and Joe Kelly, expanding major arcs such as Fatal Attractions, Age of Apocalypse, Onslaught, and Operation: Zero Tolerance. The title explored identity, trust, and division within the mutant ranks as the team evolved through new lineups and threats.
Running from issue #1 through #113, the 1991 X-Men series eventually reverted to the classic New X-Men title in 2001 with Grant Morrison’s relaunch. This run remains one of the most iconic and influential chapters in the X-Men’s publishing history, defining the look, tone, and drama of Marvel’s mutants for the next decade.
