New Mutants (Marvel Comics, 2009–2012)
The New Mutants series relaunched in 2009 as part of Marvel’s post-Messiah Complex era, written by Zeb Wells with art by Diogenes Neves. It reunited the original 1980s team — Cannonball, Sunspot, Magik, Dani Moonstar, Karma, and Cypher — now older and battle-hardened, brought back together to handle unfinished business from their past.
The run began with the storyline Return of Legion, in which the team faces Professor Xavier’s unstable son, whose fractured mind threatens mutantkind once again. The series recaptured the balance of character-driven drama and supernatural danger that defined the original New Mutants, while giving the characters more mature, complex arcs.
Major storylines included Necrosha, which tied into the resurrection of fallen mutants, and Fall of the New Mutants, featuring a dark twist involving government experiments and clones of the team. Later arcs explored their evolving roles within Cyclops’s Utopia-era mutant community.
Running for 50 issues before transitioning into New Mutants: Dead Souls and later New X-Men initiatives, the 2009–2012 New Mutants volume successfully blended nostalgia with modern X-Men storytelling — reuniting the classic team under new pressures in a world that had moved on without them.
