DVDs and CDs are becoming cool again, thanks mostly to Gen Z
Dan Levine loves watching his guests light up when they see his DVD-lined bookcases and drawers in his Brooklyn apartment. It’s as if they’ve traveled back in time to 2006, he said. “It is a really powerful thing to show that I still take pride in owning things that make me happy,” Levine said. The 30-year-old estimates he has over 500 DVDs. And that’s not including his modest collections of CDs, VHS tapes, vinyl records, cassettes and 8-tracks. Since the 2010s, streaming has dominated media consumption, and with that, sales of DVDs and CDs have sunk. And yet discs are still circulating in retail, and in some cases, demand is reviving — particularly from collectors. Discogs, an online marketplace for
“Thanks for all the fish…”
Just wanted to say thanks to all of you early adopters and brave souls who have registered accounts and taken a chance on our growing baby here. We’ve been selling online for years, and before that we had an actual brick and mortar store for over a decade. But this is the first time we’ve tried setting up and running our own website. And let me just say… it’s coming along nicely. In fact, this month might be the first month our Pop Life website actually pays for itself. Now I don’t mean makes a big profit. I simply mean it might cover its own operating costs. But that includes paying me for the hours of work I do, adding
SAVE THE PLANET! PHYSICAL MEDIA FOR THE WIN!
Streaming feels environmentally “clean” because you can’t see it. But that invisibility is a big fat nasty trick. An oozing, polluting, environmentally catastrophic tar pit– laugh track included. Every time you press play on a streaming service, you’re tapping into a massive global machine: data centers thrumming nonstop, driving nearby neighbors crazy with their constant, unceasing hum, server farms cooking digital ones and zeroes around the clock, and energy-intensive networks moving enormous amounts of ai slop across the planet. And it happens again. And again. And again—every rewatch, every autoplay, every “just one episode more.” Digital convenience isn’t sinless. It’s constant, ongoing, environmentally taxing consumption. Addicting. Heat-generating. Destructive. Physical media works differently. A Blu-ray, DVD, or CD is manufactured once,
Mo’ Movies! Mo’ Movies! Mo’ Movies! Awesome Blu-ray & 4K UHD! Lots of Great New Stuff!
Took a little drive today (about 2 hours there and back) to grab a few boxes of blu-rays for the shop. Got a bunch of kids movies, superhero flicks and rare finds (along with a few 4K movies). I’ll be listing them over the next few days so keep an eye on our movie categories if you are a diehard movie collector like us. We got a good deal on them so we’ll be passing the savings on to you. The best part is, they are all mint condition and a good portion of them have their original slipcases. Guy was really nice, and he agreed to hold off on selling any more of his collection without giving us a

Today’s Find– More Comics!
Bought a nice little collection of comics today and will be listing them in the shop as I can work on them. Check the flip-through video and if there’s anything you want comment below and we will be sure to put them to the front of the line. Vision and the Scarlet Witch #4 from 1983 is mine tho! That was a comic I had and loved as a 12 year old kid. I remember how much I loved the art and the story is pretty good too. It’s the issue where we learned that Magneto was Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s father. I’m keeping that one for myself. All the rest are going on or have already been listed on
New CDs For the Store! Prepare For A Very Big Dump!
Just got back home from Carterville, IL where we purchased a large collection of CDs to drop on all you music fanatics. This haul was chock full of great stuff. The man who sold it to us said he thought there was about 500 CDs in the collection, but it actually turned out — once we got it home and started going through it — that he greatly underestimated the number of CDs. There was actually closer to 1,000 CDs in this lot! Great for us, and great for you guys, too! Not only that, this haul is full of rare titles and imports. Most of it is R&B and Funk, but there is also New Wave, Rap, Broadway, Country,
It Just Keeps Getting Bigger and Bigger!
For the folks who have signed up and made purchases already, thanks for your support. We are nearly finished getting the bones of our new web store put together and are moving on to the part where we enter all the great inventory we’ve accumulated over the years. This will probably take a while, but we are going to start hitting it as hard and fast as we can. We have a lot of stuff from our old ebay store that will have to be entered here so expect new inventory to drop in chunks in various categories for the foreseeable future, as fast as we can possibly go. Why not just keep selling on ebay, you ask? Well, a
