Avengers, Vol. 1 (Marvel Comics, 1963–1996)
Launched in 1963 by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, The Avengers Vol. 1 brought together some of Marvel’s greatest heroes for the first time. The original lineup — Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, and Wasp — united to defeat Loki, establishing the foundation for what would become Marvel’s flagship superhero team.
Over its three-decade run, the series evolved through numerous eras and creative teams. Captain America soon joined the roster, becoming the moral center of the group, while new heroes like Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Vision, and Black Panther expanded its legacy. The title became known for redefining the concept of teamwork in superhero comics, balancing cosmic-scale action with deeply human conflicts.
Classic storylines such as “The Kree-Skrull War,” “The Korvac Saga,” and “Under Siege” cemented The Avengers as a cornerstone of Marvel continuity. The series also introduced some of the publisher’s most enduring villains, including Ultron, Kang the Conqueror, and Baron Zemo.
Running for over 400 issues, Avengers Vol. 1 ended in 1996 with Onslaught: Marvel Universe, paving the way for later relaunches — but its legacy as the definitive era of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes remains unmatched.
