Factor X (Marvel Comics, 1995)
Factor X was a four-issue limited series published in 1995 as part of Marvel’s Age of Apocalypse storyline. Written by John Francis Moore with art by Steve Epting, it reimagines familiar X-Men characters in a world ruled by Apocalypse, where mutants dominate and humans are an oppressed minority.
The series focuses on the Summers brothers, Scott and Alex, who serve as high-ranking enforcers in Apocalypse’s hierarchy. Cyclops begins to question the regime’s brutality, while Havok grows increasingly ruthless, leading to a deadly rivalry that threatens to tear them apart. The story also features alternate versions of familiar figures like Jean Grey, the Beast (as the sadistic Dark Beast), and the Prelates who oversee human extermination camps.
Factor X explores loyalty, corruption, and conscience in a world without Xavier’s dream — showing how even the most disciplined soldiers can lose themselves in a war for mutant supremacy. It stands as one of the darker and more character-driven corners of the Age of Apocalypse saga.
