Frogs (1972) is a campy eco-horror film set in the bayous of the southern United States. The story revolves around a wealthy, arrogant man named Ray Allen, who owns a sprawling estate on a secluded island. Ray invites his family and a group of guests to celebrate his birthday, but tensions rise as old family grudges and environmental issues come to the forefront.

As the guests arrive, strange things begin to happen. The surrounding wildlife — frogs, snakes, lizards, and even turtles — start to act unusually aggressive, targeting the humans. The animals seem to be getting back at the guests for their mistreatment of nature. One by one, the guests fall victim to attacks from the increasingly hostile creatures. The frogs themselves are the main antagonists, swarming and attacking in large numbers, but the animals’ collective rage signifies a broader environmental revenge against human exploitation.

As the characters are picked off by the amphibious creatures and other wildlife, the film takes on a surreal tone, blending eco-horror with elements of suspense. In the end, it’s unclear whether the frogs and other creatures are simply reacting to their mistreatment or if there’s something supernatural at play.

The movie combines environmental messaging with a classic creature feature, albeit with cheesy special effects and a deliberately slow buildup. It’s a campy take on nature’s revenge, typical of the 1970s eco-horror craze.

It has since gained a cult following for its quirky premise and over-the-top moments.
