Hulk 2099 (Marvel Comics, 1994–1995)
Hulk 2099 is Marvel’s dystopian reimagining of the Hulk, set in the far-future Marvel 2099 timeline. The series follows John Eisenhart, a corporate figure whose life is violently upended when he becomes the monstrous Hulk of 2099—an unpredictable, feral powerhouse born out of the era’s obsession with power, control, and engineered evolution.
Before headlining his own title, Hulk 2099 first appeared in the 2099 Unlimited anthology, where his origin and early status quo were established. The solo Hulk 2099 series then launched in late 1994 and ran for 10 issues, leaning into gritty cyberpunk themes: authoritarian rule, corporate corruption, bio-experimentation, and the question of whether “order” in 2099 is just another form of tyranny.
Tonally, the book is louder and harsher than classic Hulk—more survival horror and dystopian action than tragic superhero melodrama—while still keeping the core Hulk idea intact: a man transformed into something the world can’t control, forced to decide what kind of monster he’s going to be.
